Countdown to Bulawayo Dam Depletion

Dry taps, long borehole queues and odious waiting for water bowsers is still here with us, as the City of Bulawayo’s supply dams are set to dry down within the next 3 and a half months, by 18 October 2025 – according to the 02 July 2025 Council Minutes.

As of 20 May 2025 Bulawayo’s supply dams held a combined 47.05% of their total capacity—about 195 million cubic meters. It sounds reassuring. Until you realize that by 18 October 2025 all the City’s supply dams are expected to have depleted, plunging the City back to its dry episodes again.

Bulawayo City Council has sounded the alarm, now it’s incumbent upon everyone to take relevant responsible actions to avert a water induced health catastrophe in Zimbabwe’s second largest City.

As Voices for Water, we call to the attention of the following and urge them to take these necessary actions:

  1. We call to the attention of the Bulawayo City Councilors and the residents’ groups to take note of this dire situation and begin raising awareness to the residents so that they may use water responsible and sparingly.
  2. We call to the attention of the Bulawayo Members of Parliament to hold the Zimbabwe government’s Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) accountable on its bulk water provision mandate
  3. We also call to the attention of the Bulawayo residents and stakeholders to act vigilantly in order to avert a day zero situation in the City.
